Touch Into The Dungeon!

The newest version of Plunge Into The Dungeon is available to play online, with newly added touch controls! Up until now, a keyboard was required to play the game. That meant if someone opened the game in a browser on their phone, it would technically load, but nothing would be interactable or playable. That all changes today with the addition of touch support across the entire game! It's still not quite a full mobile release yet (that's still on the roadmap) but this will at least make it playable on your phone in the web browser of your choice!

Here's the list of everything I added/fixed:

  1. Added Touch/Swipe Support
    1. By simply touching the right half or the left half of the screen, you can now move through the dungeon and collect that sweet sweet loot!
    2. You can now also swipe left and right to move your character, if that's more your speed
  2. Added a Virtual Keyboard
    1. Since RPG Maker has no way of utilizing the built-in mobile keyboard on your phone, I needed to improvise. So I made my own keyboard within RPG Maker using JavaScript! Now when you get a high score you can proudly type your name to display on the (local )high score board!
  3. Added Typing Sounds
    1. After adding the virtual keyboard, I realized how quiet the typing was. I didn't notice it when typing my name on a keyboard because of the clickity-clackity of the physical keyboard. So now whether you're typing on a physical or virtual keyboard, it'll play some beautiful 8-bit sounds!
  4. Added Pre-Caching of Images and Audio Assets
    1. Since the game is running fully in a web browser, and since RPG Maker doesn't try to load an image or audio file until it's actually needed, there were some significant delays sometimes when trying to play a song or load a bunch of images for the first time, especially when loading a level for the first time. So I made it so that it would pre-load all the game's images and songs when the game first loads, so even if you are in a place with terrible wifi or spotty cell signal, the levels shouldn't take too long to load, and there shouldn't be as much of a delay when collecting valuables or taking hit from monsters.
  5. Menu Touch Controls
    1. What update featuring touch controls to play the game would be complete without touch enabled menu controls? Well, this one. Because the menus were still only navigable by keyboard! But no more, you can now use mouse, keyboard or touch to navigate the menus in the game!
